A1labarts First Annual Juried Exhibition: “Connections”

A1Labarts, based in Knoxville, Tennessee, is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1995 by a group of local artists. It is dedicated to multi-disciplinary and experimental exploration of contemporary art issues in all media. This competition, made possible by a generous donation to honor two founding members will be a yearly event. We invite you to share your interpretation of “Connections”. All media is welcome, and collaborations are encouraged. There is no fee for 2019 A1labarts members.  (Join now and enjoy inclusion into two additional shows as well as other member benefits.) The exhibition will take place in the lower level of the Emporium Center located in the heart of the arts district in downtown Knoxville. It is free and open to the public from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 PM.

Juror

Katie Hargrave (b. 1985 Chicago, resides Chattanooga, TN) is a professor at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. She received her MFA in Intermedia from the University of Iowa, MA from Brandeis University, and BFA from the University of Illinois. Her work has been shown at DIY spaces, university galleries, non-profits, and festivals. She is a member of the collaborative groups “The Think Tank that has yet to be named” and “Like Riding a Bicycle.”

Important Dates

Online submissions due: January 18

Accepted work delivered to the Emporium: Sunday, February 24 (2-4pm) and February 25 (9-5pm)

Opening: March 1, 5-9pm, Awards ceremony at 6 PM

Pick up of work after closing at the Emporium, April 1, (9-5)

Awards

First Place: The Cathy and Bernie Award – $500 (Given in honor of two founding members of A1labarts)

Second Place: $200, Honorable Mentions – A1 Memberships, Visitors Award: $100

Guidelines

*Open to all artists 18 and older

*Submission Fee for non-members of A1labarts $35 for 1-3 pieces

*An entry form must be submitted with the digital images and entry fees

*Work must be original and not have been previously exhibited at the Emporium or A1LabArts  

*Performance, video/sound art (all limited to 10 minutes) will be displayed on monitors

*Size cannot be more than 10 feet in any direction and weigh more than 100 lbs.     

*All artwork will be handled with reasonable care

*Judging criteria will include artistic originality, innovation, and relevance to current societal and cultural issues  

*All delivered work must represent the submitted digital images, be ready to hang or display or will not be accepted

*Shipping information upon request, all shipping costs are the responsibility of the artist

*All accepted work must not be removed until the end of the exhibition

*The gallery will retain 25% of work sold during the exhibition

*Work not picked up at the designated time will become the property of The Emporium, unless previous arrangements have been made
