The Community Arts Committee of the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation is seeking a
qualified artist or artist team to design, fabricate and assist with installation of an innovative,
original outdoor sculpture to be permanently installed at the corner of 4th Street and Pierre
Street in downtown Manhattan, Kansas. Applications are due on December 31, 2021
Description of location: The proposed project site is on the corner of two main streets within
the downtown sector of Manhattan: Pierre and 4th Streets. This east end of Pierre Street is a
visible gateway leading into the town from Highway 177 and Interstate 70. It is also the start of
a historic corridor through one of Manhattan’s earliest historic and diverse neighborhoods.
Because of its location in a growing commercial and cultural center, the proposed site is poised
to exhibit a sizable and impactful piece of work.
Considered proposals should:
• Demonstrate artistic quality, innovation and originality
• Be conceptually timeless and enduring
• Reflect the Manhattan, KS community and/or its history
• Show sensitivity to the surrounding community and address site characteristics
• Complement the scale of the surrounding streetscape
• Be safe for the public and maintain clear site lines for traffic
• Be made of highly permanent materials that are suitable to the environment and require minimal maintenance
• Comply with all building and electrical codes and bylaws
RFQ’s accepted until December 31, 2021. All RFQ materials may be submitted via online
application.

Anticipated total project budget: base amount of $25,000 (potentially greater for exemplary
project)

• CV including 3 professional references
• Artist statement of purpose including interest in project
• Work sample images: 3-5 images of 3 different past projects/works that demonstrate your
materiality and style in regards to outdoor sculpture. Please name images to match with their
descriptions.
• Work sample descriptions: In a separate document, please describe each featured
project/work including the project site, dimensions of the work, and estimated budget.
• Artist website information and social media handles, if applicable
