Call for Proposals, due March 16th, 2018 5 PM CST
Decisions announced April 6th.
Residency dates: June 9th through August 25th, 2018.
CONNECT is a three month residency supporting innovative curatorial practices while linking curators to Roots & Culture’s community of artists and audiences.
This year we are announcing two changes to the eligibility of candidates for our CONNECT program:
CONNECT now solely serves women of color curators-
to contribute to a realignment of equity in the art world.
CONNECT is open to curators working locally as well as nationally and internationally.
The residency is exhibition-based. Applicants will submit a proposal for a single exhibition that they will be responsible for organizing at the gallery, that will open at the end of the second month of their residency. Roots & Culture will provide on site housing, a monthly stipend of $200, and a shipping budget of $500 to the successful applicant. Local curators can opt out of the on-site accommodations.
To apply:
Send all materials to rootsandc@gmail.com.
Submit a 300 word exhibition proposal, a current CV, 15 images and/or up to 3 two minute video excerpts of works representative of the proposed show. Please send materials organized into folders, zip files, or via a third party download/ hosting site. Google Drive is a preferable option. There is a $10 submission fee per proposal, payable by check or Paypal, pay HERE. Mailing address is 1034 N Milwaukee Ave. Chicago, IL 60642.
The residency will take place June 9th through August 25th, 2018. The opening date of the exhibition will be July 28th. The successful applicant will be expected to give a presentation about their work at a time TBD and host gallery hours on Saturday afternoons for the duration of their show.  As an additional component of the residency, the curator will be expected to visit the studios of 15 artists working in the Chicago area throughout the three month time. Roots & Culture will assist the curator with arrangements for the studio visits.
These studio visits are meant to connect our community of artists with the prospective curator. There is no expectation for the curator to program these artists in their exhibition.
The proposal should reflect a fully formed exhibition with artists that the curator is already familiar with. After the acceptance date of the proposal, limited modification of the details of the exhibition will be allowed.
At this time, Roots & Culture will only accept proposals from individual curators. Please contact Roots & Culture at rootsandc@gmail.com with any questions about accommodations.
