Differences between a resume and a curriculum vitae

In the phases of human life, everyone comes across a very common set of questions. You also might have faced some of those common questions in your life. One of them is regarding CV and Resume. But before you can understand the difference between them, you need to know what are they.

What is a cv?

A CV is a summary of skills and experience that you gather. Normally you need to write everything in your CV and hence they tend to be longer than the resume.

You need to include your academics, experience as a teacher, research, publications, presentations etc. in detail. The collective at Viable Studios has put together a pretty helpful guide to writing a CV. that you should check out.

What is a Resume?

A resume is nothing but the summary of your work, education, credentials and skills. It normally comes within a single page and you need to use the bullet points to highlight the skills and important information.  There are a few different formats for the resume, you need to know which one you can use. The College Art Association has some great resume conventions that you can view online as well.

Applying as an artist

Well, like any other profession, being an artist , you might need to come up with your skills and experience. But in the case of artists, it is much easier for them to explain things in a CV or a resume. There are 2 parts as a whole. The first part deals with the job that allows you to keep going and have food, clothes, shed and get money for the health issues and the next part is the artistic part. This is where you need to work had to have your presence in the world of art. If an artist is able to mix these 2 parts together and go on, this is when they have reached their actual goal. But until then, you as an artist will require 2 documents, 1 CV and 1 resume.

While making them, some points or the other will concise but otherwise they should be different all together. You need to understand what you can put on your CV and what you should write in the resume. This will help you to understand where you should submit each one.

Your resume should include the employment history, detailing of the job that you have done, the kind of positions in which you worked for and your skills as an employee. Also, if you have less number of job experience you need to categorize them rather than listing them all together with the start date and end date. If you change jobs frequently, that might not be the thing you want to highlight in your resume. That is why categorization of the jobs you have done is very important. This might help you out in the long run.

A CV will be required at a point of time, when you will go for an interview regarding your hobby. A place where you would be asked to show your skills as an artist. This where your CV will come handy, you experience in the field of art and your skills and work to become an artist is what will be required then.

So, now you must have understood the difference between a Resume and a CV and where you can use them. As an artist, it is very much important to understand the difference as you might need to go for the both at certain point of time.
