MOLAA invites artists from Southern California to submit art works and ofrenda proposals for the 2017 Día de los muertos exhibition.
The exhibit is a juried display of contemporary works by local artists that honors the Día de los Muertos ritual of commemorating the lives of our deceased loved ones by building altars and artworks and gathering around our offerings to share their stories.
The exhibition will take place from October 3, 2017 through November 12, 2017 in MOLAAs Education Gallery. Deadline to submit works and proposals is Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at 11:00PM. Artists may begin submitting entry forms at any time. There is no fee to submit a form or to participate.
Altars/Ofrendas should address the aspect of Day of the Dead that revolves around passing on the myths, legends, historical events, and everyday experiences that make up our diverse community. We are particularly interested in stories that traditionally have been ignored, diminished, or even hidden. The altar can be dedicated to an individual, a group, a regional community or subculture, or to a forgotten civilization.
Artworks should depict or address the way we connect with our ancestors or predecessors and how we share their stories. We are particularly interested in stories that traditionally have been ignored, diminished, or hidden.
The exhibition is open to artists of all backgrounds, national origin, gender identities and expressions. We welcome stories and traditions from all cultures.
Media: ceramics, collage, drawing, illustration, installation, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture.
