Solar Eclipse of the Art: Cosmic Alignment in Pop Culture

Excitement is starting to build for the first fully visible solar eclipse in the United States since 1979. In celebration of this momentous event, The Frame Shop Gallery in Bridgeport invites artists to submit work for our upcoming third Friday exhibition on August 18th, entitled Solar Eclipse of the Art: Cosmic Alignment in Pop Culture.

The alignment of planets, solar and lunar eclipses, meteor showers and other celestial events, while scientific in nature, often take on a magic and mysterious interpretation in music, book and film. The alignment of planets in popular movies usually indicates an event of extreme importance (The Dark Crystal, Thor: The Dark World, He-Man Masters of the Universe), and the same occurs with eclipses, (Little Shop of Horrors, A Conneticut Yankee in Kind Arthur’s Court, Hellboy) and even meteorites (Spiderman, Men in Black, Superman and honestly the list goes on and on and on…Wow, these three things happen a lot in movies and art). Cuturally, these interpretations inform and define some of our best traits as earthlings; our fascination and wonder in looking at worlds beyond our own, our pursuit of mysteries in the deep universe, and our love and playful approaches towards learning and teaching science.

The exhibit will focus on 2-D work (sized under 30×30), but other work (sculpture, performance art) will be considered on a case by case basis. Work should consider the theme of eclipses in pop culture and be ready to hang. The opening reception will occur during the 3rd Friday Artwalk in Bridgeport right next to The Zhou B Art Center.
